Macbook impressions of a PC user

My girlfriend is away in Thailand/Malaysia for 6 weeks (boo) but she left me her Macbook to play with (yey!). Despite the impression of fanboyism I imagine I display on this blog (pretty sure my most used tag is Apple) I’ve never actually owned a mac. I’ve had a few iPods and a couple of iPhones, but never one of their computers. Anyway I wanted to have a play with it so that I would be able to, hopefully, give a balanced view of them.

If anyone says that Apple doesn’t have style they are an idiot. Pretty much all Apple products look gorgeous. The Macbook is no exception.

It doesn’t quite have the same slick industrial appeal of the Macbook Pro, but it sticks to Apple’s minimalist design and works well. The build feels solid, much more so than my eeepc. The battery life is also impressive, Apple claims 10 hours. I haven’t timed how long I got out of it but it’s pretty long.

One thing I’ve noticed with all Apple software is their animations are awesome. For example in OSX, minimising programs does the cool sliding/squashing down into the corner, and you can even hold shift to watch the transition in slow mo. This is also noticeable in iOS 4 on the iPhone; transitions betweens apps and to the home screen are very nice.

The keyboard shortcuts are cool, I like smacking cmd+space to bring up spotlight and type in what I want. This goes hand in hand with spaces, which are very useful on the 13” screen.

Installing programs (and uninstalling) on OSX is a breeze. You just drag it to the applications folder and it’s done! Opposite for uninstalling. This leaves me not really trusting that it’s got rid of everything, but I guess that’s just the PC user coming through.

Why the fuck when I press enter when a file is highlighted does it try to rename is? Where the hell is the delete button? Why is @ and “ backward on a UK keyboard?

I don’t like the dock either. It seems to be made for thick people who don’t do a lot of things at once. Sure there’s expose for looking at everything you have open, but I prefer a damn task bar.

Somehow the screen isn’t big enough. Although I use an 11” netbook fine, the Macbook’s isn’t big enough. The fact that there’s the fat dock at the bottom of the screen, and always a bar along the top as well takes up too much room. I’m pretty sure Apple could bump up the resolution and this would be all fixed. They offer it on the 15”, so why not the 13”?

Conclusion? Well I don’t really have one. It’s nice and slick like most Apple products, and I’m sure I could get over my dislikes, but at the moment they are just too annoying. I’ll stay with my pc.
